Community leader Fred Booth, 67, was found dead Wednesday afternoon in the alley between Susan and Theresa Streets in Harlingen from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his right temple.

Booth was found after 2 pm by Harlingen Waterworks employee. A .38 calaber handgun was found on his legs.

Police speculated that Booth shot himself sometime near 1 pm. Justice of the Peace Lee Longoria made the ruling.

Booth, a retired Harlingen City finance director from 1967 to 1974 was born in San Benito and lived there until 1966 He was comptroller of the First National Bank of Harlingen from 1953 to 1967, was a veteran of World War II and a major in the U. S. Army 141st Infantry, 36th Division. His honors included a Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Silver Star.

Survivors include his wife Muriel of Harlingen, one son Dr. Fred Booth, Jr. of Fayettesville, NC; four daughtersm Mrs. Helen Tenney of Houston, Mrs. Allene Leech of Georgetown, Miss Sally Booth of Elgin, IL and Miss Jacqueline Booth of Corpus Christi; one sister, Mrs. Laurie Mae Calder of San Antonio and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 10 am Saturday in Buck Ashcraft Funeral Chapel, Harlingen with the Rev. James P. Giddings officiating. Burial followed in Mont Meta Memorial Park, named for Mrs. Meta Chadwick Booth, Booth's mother.

Pallbearers included Stanley Fletcher, Charles Griffin, Bert Allen, Cloice Whitley, Daniel Jaeger, and Randy Jaeger.
