Manerva McWilliams was born in Warren Co. Ky. March 13, 1810, the daughter of Andrew B. and Elizabeth J. Robertson McWilliams. Manerva married John Rutledge Cowan, and together they had the following children: Eleanor Elizabeth, John R., and Mary T. Cowan. Manerva and husband John died of unknown causes, 5 days apart. Records show that they left a minor son at their deaths, who was placed under guardianship to her daughter Mary T. Cowan's husband; Peyton R. Newgent. Records further show that Peyton Newgent was killed, subsequently, the child was placed under guardianship to another son in law; Samuel Scott, husband of Eleanor Cowan. Subsequently Samuel also died. Manerva's tombstone inscription reads: 49 yrs, 10 mos, 7 dys, Mar 13, 1810-Jan 20, 1860. Manerva McWilliams' family, were very prominent in Limestone Co. Al., and were some of the earliest settlers.
