Sarah Elsie Smethurst was born 24 Nov 1901 in Porterville, Morgan, Utah to John Alexander Smethurst and Sarah Ann (Florence) Smethurst. She was the 11th of 13 children. Her siblings were: Florence Catherine Smethurst, 9 Mar 1883; John Henry Smethurst, 20 Aug 1885; Harriet Jane Smethurst, 10 Mar 1887; William Aaron Smethurst, 19 Sep 1888; Harvey Kelley Smethurst, 16 Oct 1890; James Thomas Smethurst, 11 Apr 1892; Moses Smethurst, 25 Mar 1893; Arthur Nephi Smethurst, 5 Dec 1895; Susan Rosella Smethurst, 1 Aug 1898; Millie Smethurst, 25 Jul 1900; Gilbert Crosby Smethurst, 5 Aug 1904; Steven George Smethurst, 7 Sep 1906.
Sarah went by Elsie throughout her life. She met and married Harry Keyes 15 Jun 1920 in Evanston, Uinta, Wyoming where she spent the remainder of her life. Elsie and Harry had 7 children together: Ted Elmo Keyes, Kenneth Harry Keyes, 23 Nov 1921; Elsie Louise Keyes, 8 Oct 1923 living only 6 months; Evelyn Keyes; Betty Keyes; Virginia Keyes; Jennie Ann Keyes.
Elsie died 8 Jan 1985 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah in the home of her youngest daughter Jennie Ann at the age of 83. She lived nearly 23 years longer than her husband Harry. She was buried next to Harry in Evanston, Wyoming on 12 Jan 1985.
