Heart Attack Causes Death


Mrs. Mary Cummings, 421 West Seventh Street, passed away at the residence 1:20 p.m. Tuesday from a heart attack. Funeral services will be conducted at ten o'clock Thursday morning at the Allen Chapel with the Rev. R. E. Badger in charge. Burial will be in the Clear Creek cemetery.

She was born at Harrodsburg on January 3, 1900 to John and Mary Vaughn Bodenhamer and passed her lifetime in this county.

She is survived by two daughters, Miss Joan Cummings of Washington, D.C., Miss Betsy Irving Cummings of Indianapolis and PFC Robert Cummings, who is stationed at Gunner Field, Montgomery, Alabama, who was home on furlough when the mother died.

Mrs. Cummings also leaves four sisters, Mrs. W. S. Adams, Mrs. Isis Mercer, both of Bloomington, Mrs. Hattie Hall of Ellettsville, and Mrs. Maude Clark of Bedford.

The body will remain at the Allen funeral home.

Rites for Mrs. Mary Cummings, 45, who died in her home of a heart attack, were held today in the Allen chapel. She was a native of Harrodsburg. Survivors include two daughters, two sons, including Irving Cummings of Indianapolis, and four sisters.

1900 US Federal Census. Mary Bodenhamer was just 17 months when the 1900 Census was taken. She was living on East 1st Street in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana with her parents, John and Mary, and her many siblings.

1910 US Federal Census. By 1910, Mary was 11 years old and attending school. She was still living in Bloomington, Indiana with her parents, brother, Clint and sister, Isis.

1920 US Federal Census. Mary married John Cummings on February 20, 1915, at the age of 16. She and John were living on West First Street in Bloomington, Indiana, in 1920. She and John had three children, ages ranging from 4 years old to 7 months.

1930 US Federal Census. Now living on West 4th Street in Bloomington, Mary is a 31 year old mother to four children. Her children are: Irving, age 14; Robert, age 12; Joan, age 10 and Betty, age 6. Her husband, John, runs a lathe at a stone mill.

1940 US Federal Census. Sadly, by 1940 Mary and John divorced. Their youngest daughter, Betsy, was living with John while Mary was living in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was renting out a room to two lodgers, the Schmidts.
