Hiram was the second of 5 children born to Oakes and Molly Starns. His siblings were Herbert, Thomas, Stanley and Birdie. Herbert (1892) and Hiram (1894) were born in eastern Oregon. Then the family moved to Kittitas County in Washington State around 1895.
They homesteaded just 60 miles to the east of Mt. Rainier near the towns of Ellensburg and Thorp. Here his next two siblings were born. Thomas in 1896 and Stanley in 1898. Stanley died when he was 6 months old and is buried in the Thorp Cemetery. Birdie was born a year later. By 1910 (and possibly much before that) Oakes, Molly and the four children left Kittitas County and farmed in eastern Washington in Spokane County near the Idaho border.
By 1920 they they had all moved directly south to Summerville, Union County Oregon, near the city of LaGrande. The family lived on the farm they owned free and clear. Hiram eventually owned farms of his own. Hiram served in WWI. It appears he never married.
