John's father, Thomas Starns, was a traveling Methodist minister. John was born in Bold Springs, Texas while his father was temporarily assigned to that area by the Methodist Episcopal Church South. He was the sixth of the Starns children.
When John was 13, his father organized a wagon train in the spring of 1873 and the family left Kansas to relocate down the Santa Fe Trail to Trinidad, Colorado. They stayed there until 1876 when Thomas formed another wagon train and headed for Oregon. By then John was 16. They arrived in Monroe, Benton County, Oregon in October after 5 months on the trail.
John's maternal grandparents, William and Hannah Lewis, had come to Oregon 23 years earlier - before statehood. They were homesteading in the rich farm land on the temperate side of the Cascade Mountains. There, the Starns family lived with the Lewises for several years. John worked as a farm hand for his sister Kate and her husband Miles Starr. John was a farmer his entire life, at first as a employee, then a farmer with a mortgage, then before 1920 he owned his 175 acres of land free and clear.
In October 1881 John married Katherine Rickard in Monroe. After getting married Katherine and John did not have children immediately which was more typical. Perhaps because they were childless, they were given a child by a family - Americus and John Holt. Anna Belle Holt and her twin Irma were born September 10, 1881 in Yell County, Arkansas. Shortly after giving birth to the twins the family set off from Arkansas heading to Oregon. The Holt family lore says Mrs Holt died on the trail in April 1882. She was buried in Oregon. Perhaps overwhelmed, Mr. John Holt gave at least two children to local families. Anna Belle was raised by John and Katherine. Her sister, Adella, who was 2 years older was adopted by Edward Upmeyer and his wife. Later John and Katherine had two biological children, John Thomas Cleveland Starns in 1884 and Rosa in 1891.
In 1948, at the age of 87, John died of a heart condition at the Albany hospital. Katherine died 8 months later. They are both buried at Riverside Cemetery in Albany, Oregon. Anna Belle's memorial is # 57982122
