BANNER, EVELYN NISBETT HAYS - age 86, died on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at Fort Sanders Hospital.

Born on April 2, 1923, in Knoxville, Tennessee. Evelyn was devoted and loving to her children and grandchildren and was a role model for her belief in independence through education. Her spirit was indomitable. She spent her childhood on the family farm in Jonesborough, Tennessee with her grandparents during the Great Depression. She was a graduate of Knoxville High School and attended the University of Tennessee where she was a member of the Sigma Kappa sorority.

In her early career, she served as executive assistant to Mr. Olan Mills during the startup of Olan Mills Studios and she piloted his company plane. She worked in Oak Ridge during World War II. Her career continued at Robertshaw Controls Company, Fulton Sylphon Division, where she retired after twenty years as Director of Safety, Health and Environmental Administration.

Married to Warren A. Banner, Jr. in 1955, they had four children and eight grandchildren. She was a member of Lake Hills Presbyterian Church.

Preceded in death by her parents, Katherine Wilson Hays McConkey and Robert Reeves Hays; brother, Robert Reeves Hays, Jr.; grandparents, Emma Isabel Hays and William Tell Hays; aunts, Nancy Margaret Hays and Sarah Ruth Hays.

Survived by children: Warren A. Banner, III, wife Susan Conant, and their daughters Grace Conant Banner and Rachel Conant Banner; Katherine Ann Banner and daughters Chloe Atkin Akers and Katherine Margaret (Katie) Akers; Jennifer S. Banner, husband James Schaad, and their daughters Isabel Chrystine Schaad and Caleigh Sudduth Schaad; Sarah Margaret Banner Jackson, husband Scott Jackson, and their children Robert Casey Jackson and Harley Carrie Jackson; sister, Betty Hays Peterson, Austin, Texas; several nieces and nephews.

Interment on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 11:00 a.m. at Highland Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers: Warren A. Banner, III, James Schaad, Scott Jackson, Robert Casey Jackson, Charles Howorth, III, Nick Spiva, and Howard Spiva.

Memorial service on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, 4:30 pm, at Lake Hills Presbyterian Church, 3805 Maloney Rd., Knoxville, TN 37920, Pastor James W. McTyre officiating.

Receiving of friends 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Lake Hills Presbyterian Church following memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Boone's Creek Historical Trust, 305 Christian Church Rd, Gray, Tennessee 37615 (boonescreektrust.org) or Lake Hills Presbyterian Church, 3805 Maloney Road, Knoxville, TN 37920.
