Jean Danvers Griffith, 93, peacefully left this life on Mothers Day, May 10, 2009 at her home in Salt Lake City surrounded by her beloved family. She maintained the same quiet elegance in departing this life as she exemplified during all of her mortal years of service. Truly she has lived a royal life and became a queen for eternity. The "salt" of her life gave flavor and joy to all who shared her love and all of us are better for the light she left with each of us! Jean was born to Wilford and Ida Richardson Danvers in Alameda, California on January 28, 1916. At the age of 8, they moved with her brother and three sisters to Ogden, Utah, which was her home until she married. She graduated from Brigham Young University in 1936 and taught middle school and high school English in Minersville and Ogden, Utah. Many of her male students fell in love with their beautiful young teacher. Her outer beauty was only exceeded by her inner beauty and her kind and compassionate heart. Jean married the love of her life, John "Griff" Griffith, on December 12, 1940 in New York City, where they would live for the next 40 years. They were sealed on August 24, 1942 in the Salt Lake Temple. In 1980 retirement brought them back to their childhood home in the mountain valleys of Utah. Their 63 years of loving marriage brought Jean great joy and positively influenced the lives of all of their family and friends. A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in many capacities including Stake Primary President, Ward Relief Society President, Missionary with her husband to Athens Greece and Hostess Coordinator of President Kimball's Dedication of New York's LDS Church Facility at Lincoln Center. She also enjoyed performing in the New York "Singing Mothers" that participated in the New York World's Fair in 1963. Once in Salt Lake she volunteered for many years as a Hostess at the LDS Church Office Building. She remained faithful in many callings through the last days of her life. Five children blessed the lives of Jean and Griff. They are John Griffith of Whidbey Island, Washington, Diane and Laurence Gibbs of Putnam Valley, New York, Charles and Lori Griffith of Layton, Utah, Karen and Ron Merrill of North Salt Lake, Utah and Kevin Griffith of Provo, Utah. Jean was always excited to see her 27 adoring grandchildren and eight precious great-grandchildren. As her family, we lived in the presence of an angel, whose very countenance filled our lives with light, peace, and the pure love of Christ. She is preceded in death by her husband Griff, her parents, her brother John, and her two sisters Eunice and Laura. She is survived by her sister Anne Hales and her sister-in-law Beryl Griffiths as well as all of her children and grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 1:00 pm, at the LDS Ensign Stake, 135 "A" Street. Friends gathered at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Friday evening from 7-9 pm and at the ward from 11:30-12:30 p.m. prior to the services. Interment: Ogden City Cemetery, 20th & Madison, Ogden, Utah, near 4:00 pm Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Perpetual Education Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
