J. Eldon Checketts, 81, died Monday, November 2, 1998 at McKay-Dee Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

He was born June 29, 1917 in Tremonton, a son of Parley Samuel and Ruby Leona Harris Checketts. On November 27, 1940, Eldon married Gertrude VanDeGraff in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Gertrude died August 7, 1997.He was reared and educated in Cache County and had lived in various places. He had lived in the Ogden area for most of his life.

Eldon was a member of the South Ogden 1st LDS Ward (formerly the 14th Ward) where he was a High Priest. He served as a Home Teacher, High Priest Group teacher and taught in other various organizations within the church. He had been employed as a real estate agent. Eldon served as a volunteer fireman for the South Ogden Fire Department for 36 years and also served as an auxiliary officer for the South Ogden Police Department.

Eldon's hobbies included hunting and fishing with his sons and grandsons. He loved to work on his cabin in Scare Canyon.

Surviving are two sons and two daughters, Brent E. Checketts, Sunset; Paul C. (Ann) Checketts, Newark, Calif.; Marla (Larry) McKenzie, Ogden; Colleen (Jeffrey) Brown, Sandy; 14 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, one great-grandchild and seven step-great-grandchildren. Eldon is also survived by LuDean (Wally) McQuarrie, Bountiful; Betty (Elmo) Bowden, Sunset; and many adoring nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and seven brothers.

The family wishes to thank the staff at McKay-Dee Hospital for the care they gave to Eldon.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., with Bishop Richard Singleton officiating. Friends may call at the mortuary on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday Noon to 12:45 p.m. Interment, Lindquist's Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Road.
