Mark David Flint, 57, of Leonia, N.J., and formerly of Fairmont, passed away Sunday (March 4, 2012) in Phoenix, Ariz.
He was the beloved son of Jeanne Prendergast Flint of Fairmont and the late Johnny Flint.
Mark was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Fairmont and a 1972 graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, where he was an outstanding student. While in Fairmont, he sang for many groups and churches in Marion County and was formerly the organist at Diamond Street Church.
Mark graduated from West Virginia University, where he obtained a double music major in voice and piano. During his time at West Virginia University, he spent time studying music in Graz, Austria. After graduating from West Virginia University, he attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. By the age of 32, Mark was the chair of the Opera Department of the University of Illinois.
For over 35 years, Mark led the majority of orchestras in world-renowned opera houses and symphonies throughout the United States and Canada. In life and in his work, he performed with boldness, passion and love. He was a respected and devoted friend to every person he came in contact with including singers, directors, designers and opera administrators.
One of Maestro Flint's most beloved professional moments was orchestrating the David DiChiera/Bernard Uzan opera Cyrano, which he conducted the World Premiere of in October 2007 at the Michigan Opera Theatre and again in 2011 at Florida Grand Opera. Other noted premieres included the World Premiere of Ned Rorem's Our Town at Lake George Opera and the International Premiere of Tobias Picker's Thérese Raquin at L'Opera de Montreal. Mark also served internationally several times as a guest conductor.
In addition to his mother, Mark is survived by his lifelong companion, Steven Horak of New Jersey; an uncle, Rev. Jack Flint and his wife Betty Lou of Colfax; aunt, Joyce Flint of Fairmont; and cousins, Dr. Robert Flint and his wife Melissa of Fairmont, Dr. Linda Ray and her husband Dr. William Ray of Fairmont, Cathy Linger and her husband Don of Buckhannon, Jack O. Flint and his wife Becky of Fairmont, John Prendergast and his companion Stephen of Hazelton, Pa., David Prendergast and his wife Elizabeth of Massachusetts; Ann Samol and her husband Tom of Wheeling, and Paul Prendergast of Washington, D.C. He is also survived by special friends, Diane and Bernard Uzan and David DiChiera.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mark's memory to the First Baptist Church of Fairmont, 901 Fairmont Ave., Fairmont, WV 26554 or to the Humane Society of Marion County, P.O. Box 905, Fairmont, WV 26554.
Friends and family may visit the Ford Funeral Home, R.C. Jones Chapel, 1410 Country Club Road, Fairmont. on Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m. The casket will lie in state at the First Baptist Church, 901 Fairmont Ave., Fairmont, on Saturday, from 10 to 11 a.m. The funeral service will be held in the church on Saturday, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Valerie Gittings officiating. The committal service will follow at the Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Fairmont.
