Harold E. "Bud" Beerbower, 84, of Fairmont, died Thursday (March 10, 2011) in the Fairmont General Hospital.
He was born May 5, 1926, in Fairmont, the son of the late Kenneth Ronald Beerbower and Etta Belle Fitzpatrick Beerbower. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Elizabeth Michael Beerbower.
He is survived by his two sons, Kenneth R. Beerbower II and his fiancee Pamela Heinze, both of Fairmont, and Harold E. Beerbower and his wife Marla Masters Beerbower, both of Mannington.
He is survived by six grand­children, Tara Williams of Shinnston, Jason Beerbower of Mannington, Kenneth R. Beerbower III of South Carolina, Beth Ann Beerbower of Charleston, S.C., Matthew Beerbower of Fairmont, and Harold E. "Trey" Beerbower III of Mannington; three great­grandchildren, Emma Johnson of Shinnston, Sammy Johnson of Shinnston, and Sophie Beerbower of South Carolina; and a nephew and niece.
Mr. Beerbower was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Stewart.
Mr. Beerbower served in the United States Army during World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War. He was inter­viewed in 1965 by General Harold K. Johnson as a final candidate for the position of Sergeant Major for the United States Army. Mr. Beerbower retired from the military in 1968 with 26 years of service as Army Command Sergeant Major.
Mr. Beerbower was then employed by the West Virginia Division of Highways as the Marion County highways super­intendent for many years and later as a West Virginia interstate maintenance superintendent in our area.
He is a 1944 graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, attended Fairmont State College and graduated from the United States Army Counter Intelligence School. He was a member of the Korean War Veterans, American Legion Post 17, B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge No. 294 of Fairmont and was a for­mer member of the K.I.B.O. at Fairmont Senior High School.
The family will receive friends at the Ford Funeral Home, R.C. Jones Chapel, 1410 Country Club Road, Fairmont, from noon-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday and from 9-10 a.m. Monday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 10 a.m. Monday with Evangelist Brent Gallagher officiating. The committal serv­ice will follow in the West Virginia National Cemetery in Pruntytown. Military funeral honors will be held in the ceme­tery by the Marion County Military Veterans Council.
