Jess Borowski, 90, of Farmington, died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2011) at the Fairmont General Hospital. He was born Nov. 23 1920, in Spillertown, Ill.
Jess was a coal miner for the Bethlehem Steel Co.'s Barrackville Mine, having retired with 41 years in the mining industry.
He was a graduate of Barrackville High School in 1941, where he excelled in athletics and still holds the county record for most points scored by an individ­ual in a basketball game.
He was active in local politics, serving as a member of the Marion County Commission, was the former mayor of Farmington, a former sheriff of Marion County, and former fire chief for Farmington Fire Department.
He was also a member of the UMWA, the Elks Lodge 388 in Mannington, and Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1344 in Mannington.
Jess loved hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, and all sports, especially baseball. He enjoyed spending time with and supporting his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jess is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dora Menas Borowski, whom he married July 8, 1950; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Gary Graham of Katy; four grandchildren and spouses, Jess Jason and Kristen Graham of Fairmont, Justin Ryan and Lauren Graham of Morgantown, Jaime Kristen and Matt Sipher of Shinnston, and Jessica Lynne and Rick Sypult of Fairmont; four great-grandchildren, Ryan Andrew and Colin Daniel Graham, Chasen Matthew Sipher, and Kendall Reese Sypult; a sister-in-law, Rosalie Menas of Idamay; a brother-in­law, George and Patty Menas of Farmington; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great­nephews.
He was preceded in death by five siblings, Lester, Andrew, Joseph, John and Sophie.
Friends may call at the Hutson Funeral Home in Farmington on Friday from 2-9 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Saturday at 1 p.m. with Evangelist Randy Cook officiating.
