Daniel was a 1939 graduate of O'Dea High School in Seattle, Washington. He also attended Seattle College.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on December 15, 1941 and received his Radio Operator training at Scott Field, Illinois.
Daniel was later assigned as a B-17 Radio Operator to the 8th Air Force, 1st Wing, 1st Division of the 91st Bomb Group in the 322nd Bomb Squadron at Bassingbourn, England.
The young airman was awarded the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters for meritorious achievement. He also completed 20 air combat missions over occupied enemy territory.
A 1940 Federal Census states the following Butler family members: Floyd J. Butler (51); Mary A. Butler (42); Daniel Butler (18); Ella Mae Butler (11); Dale A. Butler (4).
His home of residence in 1940 was 719 North First St, Seattle, Washington. The family home residence in 1930 was Davenport, Iowa.
