Eli Higginson Bozorth was the son of Thomas DeKalb Bozorth and Lucretia Jane Buchanan. His paternal grandparents were Eli Bozorth and first wife Elizabeth Sowders. His maternal grandparents were Baptist Clergyman Simeon Buchanan and second wife Rachel Harned. Eli was born March 8, 1857 in Falls of Rough, Grayson County, Kentucky. He married Sarah Blue Burnett, the daughter of William Anderson Burnett and Judith Ann Brown Wilson, on January 11, 1882 in Grayson County.
