Funeral Services for Carroll B. Nelson, 83, Lead, will be 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001 at Christ Church, Episcopal in Lead with the Rev. Ron Hennies officiating. At Carroll's request there will be no visitation.
She died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at the Dorsett Home in Spearfish following a year long battle with cancer. Burial will be in the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Carroll Belle Caldwell was born March 2, 1917, at Hill City to Hoke C. and Sarah B.(McVay) Caldwell. The family moved to Branson, Colo., in 1920 and then moved back to South Dakota in 1932. Carroll graduated from Hill City High School in 1933. She attended Trinidad State Junior College from 1933-1934. The following year she attended Black Hills Teachers College and earned her teaching certificate in 1935. Carroll taught in Moon, S.D., Vale, S.D., Beulah, Wyo., and in Lead. On May 27, 1940, she married Quentin J. Nelson at Sterling, Colo. He preceded her in death in 1984.
Survivors include a daughter, Sue Ammons and her husband Jack of Lead; s son, Lanny Nelson and his wife Donna of Sundance; six grandchildren, Heidi and Brian Morrison of Euless, Texas, Heath and Kim Ammons of Savanah, Ga. Tonya and Bob Nelson of Deadwood, Ryan Q. Nelson of Germany, Kerry and David Ruth of Deadwood, Brian and Estella Chester of Spearfish; eight great grandchildren, Derek & Michael Morrison, Max and Carter Nelson, Tanner and Jachin Ruth, Talia Mechaley; two sisters, June Pinkerton of Nemo, and Sally St. Pierre of Wallingford, Conn; numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, Carroll was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Billie Plympton.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead.
