Edward William Gentleman was born April 30, 1891 at Platte Center, NE. He is the second of two sons born to William M. Gentleman and Mary (Whalen) Gentleman. He married Alice Mae Root on June 1, 1920 in Central City, NE. They had two sons. He was a World War I veteran. He died on August 22, 1993 in Grand Island, NE.

North Platte Telegraph, August 24, 1993:

"OGALLALA - Edward W. Gentleman, 102, died Aug. 22, 1993, at Grand Island. He was born April 30, 1891, to William and Mary Whalen Gentleman at Platte Center where he grew up. He served in the U. S. Army during World War I from 1917-1919.

Mr. Gentleman operated a tire business in Albion before graduating from auctioneer school in Kansas City, MO. He married Alice Mae Root in June 1920 in Central City.

They owned and operated the sale barn in Alliance and also lived in Wyoming, Hastings, North Platte and other Nebraska communities. His wife died in 1980 and he had been living with his son in Ogallala. Mr. Gentleman was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church. Survivors include two sons, Thomas of Ogallala and William of Gering; two grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Fort McPherson National Cemetery with the Rev. Bernard Berger officiating. Military honors will be conducted. Visitation will be noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte. A memorial has been established. Kleine Funeral Home in Grand Island is in charge of arrangements."
