John Darling Huntress
Learn about upgrading this memorial...
Birth: Oct. 4, 1838
Death: Jan. 10, 1902

John Darling Huntress was originally baptised as Major John Darling Huntress, but officially gave up his first name. He was in America at the time of the Civil War, but whether he served during the war is currently unknown. After the war he moved to Australia, where he was employed as a carpenter in New South Wales, and was involved in building some of the bridges which still stand in country New South Wales, to this day. On December 8, 1868, he married Mary Ann Gray at Goulburn, and they had several children. John died of consumption at Dubbo, New South Wales, and is buried at the Dubbo Cemetery. [From the original research of the late Roy Parker, with assistance from Barry Crompton, of Melbourne, Bob Simpson, of Beechworth, in the state of Victoria, and Len Traynor, of Sydney, and published in the 2000 volume, CIVIL WAR VETERANS IN AUSTRALIA, by Roy's daughter, Mrs. Virginia Crocker. The original research showing that this John Huntress had served in the 27th Maine Infantry has been proven, by FIND A GRAVE contributer John (Steve) Dow, as being incorrect. Further details on the actual service of John Darling Huntress will be added as data comes to hand.]

Important NOte: It should be noted that James Gray had tried to get the Dubbo City Council into accepting a VA memorial marker for the grave of John Darling Huntress, buried at the Dubbo Cemetery, as the same person who had served in the 27th Maine during the Civil War. When the Dubbo Council refused to accept his very inadequate verification of such service, Gray then threatened to go to the local newspapers and other authorities, claiming that the Council were not willing to honor a "War veteran". Thankfully, the Council would not back down, and Gray gave up.
