Sheboygan Press, Thurs. July 11, 1940, p. 3, c. 6. Montana Youth Make Kiel Trip on Saddle Horse. Kiel, Wis (Special) - Leaving Laurel, Montana, his home town, on May 26 with a pack and saddle horse, Elroy Gilles, aged 17, arrived in this city Tuesday evening, July 9. On his overland trip he appeared in a rodeo at Beach, North Dakota, and he said that in almost every city on his route newspapers took pictures of him in his western attire. Gilles arrived at St. Paul June 5 and at Bismark, north Dakota, June 17. When he arrived at Hammond, Wis, he left his two horses for a rest and continued his trip by train. He is visiting his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Schoenborn on Fremont street. He plans to leave Kiel to arrive in New York September 25, where he will attend the World's fair, and from there he plans to ride to Washington, D.C. Young Gilles, the son of Mrs. Joseph J. Gilles, was graduated from the high school in Laurel, Mont, last spring.
LAUREL - Elroy Gilles, 51, of rural Laurel died Monday of a heart attack in the Laurel Clinic. He was born Oct. 7, 1921, in Laurel, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gilles. He married Jeanne Ketchum, July 16, 1944, in Big Timber. He was an employee of the Farmers Union Central Exchange. He was owner of Gilles' Top Soil Service and worked in farming and ranching southeast of Laurel. He was a member of the Spring Creek Riders Saddle Club and the Laurel Saddle Club. He was past president of both clubs, the Montana State Saddle Club and the National Saddle Club Association. In 1941, he rode on horseback from Montana to New York. Survivors include his widow; his mother, Cora, Laurel; three sons, Jere, Ithaca, N. Y.; T.J., Laurel; Kere, Laurel; one brother, Victor A., Cheyenne, Wyo.; one sister, Mrs. Edwin Burke, Colusa Calif., and one grandchild. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Cashmore Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Marvin Northcutt of the Laurel United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Laurel Cemetery.
Elroy's wife, Jeanne Ketchum, died on Sept. 11, 2009. Her cremains were scattered over the Spring Creek homestead. She was born June 13, 1920 in Ryegate MT, the daughter of Clayton and Margaret Kaly Ketchum.
