James Richard Hill was born in Tennessee. His parents were Henderson N. Hill and Matilda Jane Bennett (Henderson's first wife). Henderson and Matilda were married March 14, 1853. James' sibling (listed below) Doctor Townes Hill, was the son of Henderson Hill's second wife, Sarah H. Roberts Hill (Find A Grave Memorial# 61787804).

As a result of a disagreement with another man, he had to flee his hometown to Owensboro, Kentucky, where he met his future wife, Sarah Ann Donoho Hill, who is also buried in Triplett Cemetery. They left Kentucky, and after a short stay in Arkansas, arrived in Indian Territory (now known as Oklahoma), where James farmed.

James and Sarah had a number of children: Rosa A., James Ellwood, Arnetta Margaret, Ollie M., John Leslie, Minnie F., Bessie M., and a daughter with the initial L. Bessie M., Arnetta Margaret Hill Strong, and L. are also buried in Triplett Cemetery.

James and his two sons would hide Belle Starr and her outlaw gang, when she and her gang came to them for help.
