COKER Eva Blanche Rice, 80, of Coker, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at DCH Regional Medical Center with Jessica Griffin, a blessed nurse, by her side. Although we mourn her passing, there is comfort in the fact that her faith in Jesus Christ sustained her until the end of her life.

Services will be Friday, September 4, at 11 a.m. at Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, with Pastor Tim Long officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Her parents, Joseph and Mary Eva Rice; brothers, Clarence Rice, Colon Rice and Carl Rice; and a sister, Berniece Cooke preceded her in death.

Survivors include her sisters, Betty Wiggins and Beatrice (Morris) Acker; a brother, Colvin (Faye) Rice; sisters-in-law, Doris Walker and Fritz Rice; ten nieces and nephews, numerous great nieces and nephews as well as great-great nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Steve Acker, Gary Cooke, James Rice, Joe Rice, Stan Acker and Chris Rice.

Honorary pallbearers are Dovie Akins, Hazel Crawford, Marion Housel, Tom Keasler, Peggy Gilbert, Preacher and Cherry Hatcher, members of Coker Cumberland Presbyterian Church, former students, friends in Coker and the residents and staff of LaRocca Nursing Home.

Blanch was born in Romulus, Alabama on July 30, 1929, the sixth child of Joseph and Mary Eva Rice. As a youngster, she helped with the daily tasks on the farm, and according to those who knew her then, she didn't walk but ran everywhere she went. She graduated from Tuscaloosa County High School and took a job with Gulf States Paper Corporation. After working there for several years, she enrolled, in the University of Alabama where she obtained both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Blanche taught at Gordo High School retiring in 1987 after 27 years of service.

She enjoyed fishing, crocheting, woodworking, painting, singing, playing both the piano and ukulele, writing lyrics and composing music and of course, Crimson Tide football. Blessed with an unpretentious servant's heart she was a devoted daughter, sister, friend, and teacher as well as an extraordinary aunt. Over the years she made many hilarious and priceless memories while spending quality time with her nieces and nephews. Even after reading this brief history of her life one can only get a glimpse of what a remarkable lady she was. Fortunate indeed are those who knew Blanche Rice.
