John P. was born in Canaan Twp.August 12,1820.The eldest son of Daniel and Diadama Phiney Bowers,the former from Massachuetts and the latter of Connecticut.In 1841 John married Ruhama Guy who was born in Franklin 1819 the daughter of Jacob and Hannah Bean Guy.They had eight children,four of which survived,Betsy L.,Daniel E.,John P.and Adda M.Mrs.Bowers died in 1871.She was a good wife, an affectionate Mother and a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church. In 1872 John P. married Alvira Newton a native of Darby Twp.No children were born of this union.Mr.Bowers spent all of his life in Darby Twp. and might be classed as a pioneer.He filled many township offices,township assessor,real estate assessor,held the place of justice of the peace for twenty seven years,and always acquitted himself as an officer who never betrayed his trust.He was appointed county commissioner to fill an unexpired term,and then he was elected at the expiration of his appointment and served out his term of office in a creditable manner.During his last term as commissioner the new court house in London,Madison Co.Oh was begun.At the laying of the cornerstone,John P. Bowers on behalf of the commissioners of Madison County delivered the speech, and a grand one it was in the year 1890.
He was initiated into Madison lodge No.221,F.&A.M.May 28,1855 and in 1859 he became a member of Urania lodge No.311 of Plain City,of which he was a member at the time of his death.He was made a Master Mason in 1873.
John P. was a man of good judgement and was always listened to when advice and council was given.
Mr. Bowers was a member of the Masonic,Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias'orders.
