A Roman Catholic all his life, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and achieved The Degree of Fourth Knight in that organization. While living in Bloomington since February of 2007, he was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Center.

John attended and graduated from Hammond High School in 1934, where he played football under Coach Carl Huffine and wrestled under Coach Scott. During the height of the Depression he and his brother Walter (Wolf) played semi-professional football for the Hammond Yellowjackets through 1936. John's primary life's work was a steelworker. Hired in 1940 by Inland Steel (Mittal), he was a first helper for many years. He held this position of Melder for several years before his retirement in 1979. He enjoyed discussing with friends and family his early experiences in the company houses at Pullman Standard during the Depression, his experience of riding the railways on a "bum" during his youth, including a trip to Washington, D.C., with WWI vets to demand benefits. John loved football and boxing. He had a rich baritone voice and enjoyed singing Polish hymns with family. He had a great love of his Polish ancestry and along with all his grandchildren, many people called him Dziadzia (Grandfather Polish).
