John was a LT COL in the Confederate Army in Company "B" 12th Alabama Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. John was married to Elverena "Ellen" Thomas on 16 September 1858 in Coosa County, Alabama. Ellen was the daughter of Etheldred Watson Thomas and Melinda McKinney. Before the war he was a school teacher in Coosa County. After the war John and his family moved to Henderson County, Texas where he homesteaded. In 1874 thru 1876 up until his death, John was the Sheriff of Henderson County, Texas. John was murdered when he was the sheriff when someone shot him through an open window at their home. John was the son of Robert Crockett Goodgame and Luticia Chapman that are buried in Coosa County. It is not known where Elverna "Ellen Goodgame is buried but is believed she is also buried in Athens City Cemetery and her grave has not been surveyed to Find a Grave as of yet. She did not move back to Coosa County but she was still living with her husband in 1870 Federal Census of Henderson County. After that she no longer appear in the 1880 Federal Census in Texas or Alabama.
