Melvina was born on August 2, 1868, in Mooers, New York. She was the daughter of Rosalie (Baker) Baron and Roman Baron Jr.
She married Horace C. Bassett. They had twelve children, eight sons and four daughters.
She died on January 1, 1932, in Ludlow, Massachusetts.

One of Town's Early Settlers Leaves Husband, Eight Sons, Four Daughters
LUDLOW- Jan. 2 - Mrs. Melvina Bassett, 63, one of the early settlers and a well known resident died yesterday morning following a long illness. Mrs. bassett, born in Moores, N. Y., came to this town 54 years ago at age nine. At the time of her arrival here there were but two houses, the McLean home in East Street and the tenement block, also in East Street. In addition to the old Hunt boarding house, the rest of the town was made up of log cabins. The Ludlow Manufacturing Associates, where Mrs. Bassett commenced work at the age of nine, was composed of the old bagging mill and the stone mill, both of which were torn down several years ago.
Mrs. Bassett, besides being a member of St. Anne's Society was an active worker of St. Jean de Baptiste parish, of which she was a chrter member. During the early days when this parish was being formed, Mrs. Bassett took an active part in the various functions and for many years served as head of the church suppers. She was also active in the social life of the town.
Besides her husband, Horace Bassett, she leaves eight sons, Charles, Patrolman Walter Bassett, Albert, Horace, William and Lionel, all of this town, and Arthur and Fred of Springfield and four daughters, Mrs. Rose Patterson, Mrs. Laura Jordan and Jessie and Lena, all od Ludlow. She laso leaves her father, Roland Baron of Hartford, four brothers, Fred and John Baron of Indian Orchard, William of Springfield and Charles of Hartford, a sister, Mrs. Ida Leo of Springfield, 29 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The funeral will be held from the home on Monday morning at 8.30 o'clock, followed by a high mass of requiem at 9 o'clock in Ste. Jean de Baptiste Church. Burial will be in St. Aloysius Cemetery, Indian Orchard.
