Death: Nov. 11, 2008

Joseph A. Barsin retired NYC schoolteacher, Port Authority of NY/NJ police officer, passed away quietly on November 11, 2008 at Peninsula Hospital, Rockaway, New York. Joe was born on August 15, 1909, graduated from Brooklyn Prep (1928), from Villanova University in 1932 and earned a Masters Degree in Criminal Psychology from CUNY. He played basketball at Villanova and later excelled at tennis, golf, bowling and, most recently, bocce at Rockaway Point. In Brooklyn, he met and married his beloved wife, Florence (Kojan), and lived in the Midwood section. Joe?s first career as a Police Sergeant involved him in the creation of Idlewild Airport (now JFK). In 1962, he retired from the PANYNJ and became a high school teacher in NYC. Once retired in the early 70s, Joe and Florence split the year between Rockaway Point and Lehigh Acres in Florida. As age curtailed the more active sports, poker twice per week, became the major event for Joe. Also in Florida, Joe volunteered to help seniors prepare income tax reports, volunteered for "Habitat for Humanity" at age 90, mastered Microsoft WORD at 92, took up the study of ?art? at age 95 and served for many years at the Lee Regional Medical Center as a volunteer receptionist. He was active in the South Florida Villanova Alumni Club and would attend at least two on campus basketball games each year. Joe is survived by his daughter Peggy Ann Fogarty, son Jay Barsin, and daughter-in-law Carol Barsin. He is also survived by six grandchildren (Tom, Joanne, and Helena Fogarty, Carolyn Hyland, and Scott and Joe Barsin III), and eight great-grandchildren. His family was his greatest enjoyment. A Memorial Service for Joe's Florida friends will be held on Tuesday Jan 6th at 10 am, at Lee Memorial Park, Lehigh Acres, Florida with interment immediately following. Reception to follow at Westminster Country Club (12 Noon). In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of Joe can be given to the Villanova University Alumni Association or St. Raphael's Church Lehigh Acres.
