~~~My friend Abe, a good, humble, decent man,what a wonderful world if there were more Abe's.~~~
Abe was my friend.I wanted to create this memorial and tribute to him, because he was a special man and deserves to be remembered.No, he was not famous, nor would he have wanted to be. That's what made him special.He was the loving son of Chaim and Rachel Cukierwar.The beloved brother of Morris,(Sonia), Annette (Nolan), Leo (Helene)and Gene(Eva).Dear former husband of Toby and Devoted Dad to Marc.Loving Uncle of Dawn,Terra,Boyd, Rudy, Frances,Alana,Jonathan and Andrew. Abe comes from a very special family. The Cukierwar family is one the the nicest, kindest people anyone would be privileged to know.Once you become friends, you're family.
I met Abe through his wonderful sister and brother Annette and Gene. In 1985 they opened a small jewelry shop in Brooklyn.I eventually started to work with the family, and then without realizing became part of the "family".The whole family at one time or another worked in the store,brothers, sisters,nieces,cousins, nephews,husbands, wives, in-laws.You might think this was a huge conglomerate,like Tiffany's but it was not.It is a humble shop, very much in keeping with the family.It just seemed as if the family made room for whoever needed to be there to make extra money or for the simplistic fact that you were with your own.They make you feel like you are their own, and to this day, they are "My Family" as well. Walking into the store is liking walking into a "hug".Who wouldn't want to be in an environment like that? When we opened we kissed and hugged and at closing the same.
One particular incident sticks in my mind.I remember being in the store one day when I did not feel well,complaining to my husband that I had to go to "work". When he stopped in the store a few hours later, there I was tucked into the couch in the back, with Abe making me tea and Mr. Cukierwar preparing a bagel for me.My own family could not have done more,these are lovely, gracious people. To this day we laugh about how hard it was to "work" there.
Abe was the one who "ran" the back room.He did whatever was needed of him. He set up,he packed up,he cleaned the showcases, he swept,he did some of the bookkeeping,he helped in front when there was an overflow of customers, he made us all tea and coffee.Nothing was to beneath Abe, and I never recalled him complaining.He kept me company outside when we tried selling little trinkets as a promotional at Christmas, and when I wanted a quick cigarette, he would stay outside in freezing weather to keep me company.When the busier season came around and sometime stress was present (last minute orders, angry customers,(a rarity actually, you really just cannot get mad at this family) Abe was a gentle face in the crowd. Nothing ruffled Abe.A bomb could go off and there would be Abe with his serene look upon his face and always a kind, loving smile for all.
As it often goes I don't ever think I told Abe what I thought of him. We never think someone is not going to be there and there is always tomorrow.But God wanted Abe home.Even as I write this I know that Abe is beholding the face of "Our Father" who is "In Heaven".I think of you often Abe along with the many other people whom you now join in Paradise. Take care of each other up there and pray for us. Enjoy your heavenly family until once again we are all reunited. You were a sweet, humble,kind,generous man.You are loved, missed and most of all remembered. Always.May Perpetual Light always shine upon you. It was my honor to know you, you mattered and left this world better than you found it.
This pray of Kaddish for my friend Abe. Traditional Jewish prayer for those who have entered Eternal Life,but actually would be appropriate to any faith.While Kaddish is traditionally known as a prayer for the dead,it is actually a prayer for the living.It is a prayer that praises God by saying God is above all praise.It is a prayer for the living,a gift of peace to help you carry on.
El malei rachamim shokhen ba-m'romim ha-m'tzei m'nuchah n'khonah tachat kanfei ha-sh'khinah b'ma'alot k'doshim u't'horim c'zohar ha-rakiah maz'hirim l'nishmot yakireinu u'k'dosheinu she-hal'khu l'olamam. Ana ba'al ha-rachamim ha-s'tirem b'tzel k'nafekha l'olamim u-tz'ror bitz'ror ha-chayim et nishmatam. Adonai hu nachalatam v'yanuchu b'shalom al mish'kabam v'nomar amen.
~~~God filled with mercy,
dwelling in the heavens' heights,
bring proper rest
beneath the wings of your Shehinah,
amid the ranks of the holy and the pure,
illuminating like the brilliance of the skies
the souls of our beloved and our blameless
who went to their eternal place of rest.
May you who are the source of mercy
shelter them beneath your wings eternally,
and bind their souls among the living,
that they may rest in peace.
And let us say: Amen~~~

~~~Heartfelt thanks to all who leave flowers for my beloved friend,I read and treasure everyone and they bring me great comfort and joy.I always try to say thank you,but sometimes time slips away.~~~
Our Darling Abraham,Beloved, Son,Father,Brother,& Uncle. May you Bring Joy To Eternity As You Have To Us.We Bathe In The Warmth Of Your Memory.
