Birth: Jun. 16, 1778
Bolton
Worcester County
Massachusetts, USA
Death: Aug. 18, 1858
Danby
Rutland County
Vermont, USA

A son of Stephen and Deborah (Crossman) Baker. Stephen married Susanna H. Mathewson, daughter of Joshua and Mary (Ross) Mathewson in 1790 at Burrillville, Rhode Island.

Stephen Baker, came from Rhode Island to Mount Holly, Vermont about 1785, where, according to Charles W. Hughes and A. Day Bradley, authors of "The Early Quaker Meetings of Vermont," Stephen and his brother Peter built the first Quaker meeting house. After this, in about 1790, he removed to Danby, Vermont. Stephen and his family returned to Rhode Island for a short time, but by 1828 returned to Vermont and permanently settled at Danby.

Abbey Maria Hemenway, author of " A Vermont Historical Gazetteer, a Magazine Embracing A History of Each Town" states that, "the widow of Stephen Baker (Suannah Mathewson), having been a smart, active woman in her day and although far advanced in years, distinctly remembered the events connected with their early settlement at Danby, the customs and circumstances of the people in those days.

Baker Cemetery is on land once owned by the Baker family. Also Baker Brook which is nearby to the cemetery is so named for the family.

Stephen is a son of the American Revolution.
