John Ferguson was born in 1826 or 27 in either Kentucky or Indiana. A resident of Crawford County, Indiana, he joined the 49th Indiana Infantry (Company A) in 1861. He saw action at Cumberland Gap and multiple other battles including most engagements up to and including the Siege of Vicksburg. Ferguson participated in the charge at Black River Bridge on May 17, 1863 that won William Wesley Kendall the Medal of Honor en route to capturing many rebel prisoners. He was killed just five days later in the assault on Vicksburg, itself.
John married Sarah Hatfield in Crawford County, Indiana on April 3, 1847. He had at least 6 children, including William (who joined the army at age 16 following his father's death), David, Daniel, Elizabeth, Harriett (Newton), and Nancy.
John Ferguson was my 4th great grandfather.
