Stephen Burtan Conner was 72 years, 7 months, and 2 days when he died. The subject of this sketch was born in Ohio and died at his home 2 miles south of the town of Bartlett at about 11 o'clock friday. When only a child, he moved with his parents to Clarke County Iowa. This same year he and his father started for California landing there in the spring of 1850. A few weeks after landing in California his father died leaving him alone in the world at the age of 17. After remaining in California for some time, he sailed from San Francisco to the Isthmus of Panama, thence to the mouth of the Mississippi River, and from there by steamboat to Iowa. At the age of 28 years he was married to Miss Lizzie Kimbrell. To this union were a boy and a girl, the latter dying in infancy. The son Harvey, with his wife and three children, reside on the farm owned by his father. In 1884, the father and family departed overland for the far west, but at Ruby Valley, Nevada he lost his wife, and a few years later he returned to Iowa and settled down near this place. Mr Conner had four brothers and two sisters, of whom only two survive, Mrs Nancy Hickman and Mrs Ann Kimbrell, both of Blue Light, Washington. Mr Conner, or "Uncle Burt" as he was familiarly known, was well known thruout Fremont County, as well as many other parts of the state. The deceased had been in poor health for a number of years with dropsy. The funeral services were conducted Sunday at 11 o'clock from the house of Elder Chas Aitken, the burial was made in Thurman cemetery.
