Sidney Eugene Harris was the fourth child and third son of Alexander Ewing Harris, Jr. and Amanda Eliza Daniel. His parents moved from Decatur County, Georgia after the War for new opportunities in Texas. Sid was their second child born in Texas. By the time Sid was 2, the family had settled in Seymour, Baylor County where he grew up and attended school.
It was in Baylor County where he met and married Simmie Mayrant Kennedy. In about 1907, Sid and his young family moved from Baylor County to Estancia, New Mexico in a covered wagon. Sid walked the wagon tongue to throw a blanket over the heads of the terrified horses to get them stopped while his petite wife applied the brake, all with five children aged 1 through 10.
The children of Sidney Eugene Harris and Simmie Mayrant Kennedy were Violet Annie, Henry Alexander, Sidney Eppes, Daisy Lillian, Teddy Mayrant and Clyde Otis.
Sid was Deputy Sheriff and later City Marshal of Estancia, Torrance County, New Mexico. It is interesting to note that Sid's grandfather was City Marshal of 1840-1841 territorial Tallahassee, Florida. Several years later, after a fire destroyed downtown Estancia, they moved back to Texas and lived there until all the children were married.
Their next venture took them to Phoenix, Arizona where Sid was the chief custodian of the Arizona State Capitol for many years. His wife Simmie knitted hundreds of socks for service men through an American Red Cross program. Sid was also close to his father Alex and his brothers Willie and Epps. Willie died there in 1929, Epps in 1933, and then Sid buried his father in 1937.
Simmie Harris died in 1953. After Simmie's death, Sid moved to Hagerman, New Mexico to be near his youngest daughter, Daisy Harris Freeman. Sid also remarried, to Martha Elizabeth Henry Freeman. He lived in Hagerman until his death, which was just 15 days short of 92 years.
Although he is listed on Simmie's headstone in Phoenix, Arizona, Sid was actually buried in Hagerman, New Mexico. You can go to that Memorial here.
