Leo Barnhardt was born December 25, 1924 to Fred and Emma (Herman) Barnhardt at their farm home at Pocahontas, Iowa. He was baptized April 25, 1925 at Pomeroy, Iowa and joined First English Lutheran Church in Ortonville, Minnesota by Confirmation in July of 1947.
He attended country school in Lockwood #3, Roberts County, South Dakota.
On September 23, 1947, he was united in marriage to Darlene Smith at First English Lutheran Church in Ortonville. Leo was a farmer all his life except for his tour of duty in the U.S. Army from April 1945 to October 1946.
In his younger days, Leo hunted ducks, geese and pheasants, and liked ice fishing. He was a collector of caps from implement companies and others with various captions.
An active Legion member, he served as post adjunct membership chairman for 23 years. On the district level, he served as membership chairman for six years. He was also County Commander, District Commander and Area State Vice Commander.
Leo passed away at the Ortonville Hospital Sunday, November 14, 1999, reaching the age of 74 years, 10 months and 19 days.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene; three daughters, Sandra, Sharyn and Suzanne; four sons, Roger, Richard, Robert Scott and Rodney; one sister, Lena Marie Gagnon; sisters-in-law, LaVerne Barnhardt, Arvilla Bergseth and Janet Athey; brother-in-law, Aaron Smith; 21 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Helen O'Brien; and brothers, Woodrow, Vyle ("Buck") and Walter.
