Pvt. Joseph Wendling was born in Mittelstrimmig town-Zell county-Koblenz District-Rhineland/Mosel-Germany. He immigrated to Milwaukee in 16 July 1852 throught New York city aboard the USS Oregon out of Liverpool, England. His Dad and Mom and family traveled up the Rhine River to Antwerp to Liverpool.
He joined the 32nd regiment Wisconsin Infantry Volunteers in Company "F" on 16 August 1862 at Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He had brown hair, dark eyes, and was 5 feet 6 inches tall and was a roof single maker at the time of enlistment. He wrote in German to his parents in Milwaukee about the war and that he may not make it (I have those letters). In and around Marietta Field Hospital, he died of disease during Gen. Sherman's march to Atlanta,GA. (SOURCE: Civil War pension record #239-136). No exact burial record has been discovered through all research efforts with the Vet. Admin. Wish a Civil War historical expert to help me locate his possible remains!

~ Those we love don't go away, They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed and very dear ~

To those who served and died to save the Union 1861-1865, we honor you Joseph Wendling for becoming a German/American soldier who knew no English but fought for this county.
