James Edgar Long was born October 10, 1899 in Tennessee, son of William Robert Long (1874-1953) and Mamie Grisham (1878-1967).

The 1900 Federal Census for Civil District 5, Tennessee (Hardin County) shows James E. Long, age 8 months, born October 1899 in Tennessee; living with his father, William Long, a farmer, age 26, born April 1874 in Tennessee; and his mother, Mamie G., age 21, born August 1878 in Tennessee.

The 1910 Federal Census for Civil District 5, Tennessee (Hardin County) shows James Edgar Long, age 10, born in Tennessee; living with his father, William R. Long, a laborer, age 36, born in Tennessee; and his mother, Mamie Grisham Long, age 31, born in Tennessee; and James Edgar's younger brother, Grisham Long, age 7, born in Tennessee. The family was living in the home of Mamie's mother, Mary M. Cobb, age 55, born in Tennessee; and Mamie's stepfather, Alfred W. Cobb, a farmer, age 63, born in Alabama. Also living in the household was Mamie's maternal aunt, Martha A. Bryan, a widow, age 65, born in Tennessee.

The World War I Draft Registration Cards show that James Edgar registered for the draft on September 12, 1918 in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County). He gave his age as 18; his birthdate as October 10, 1899; his occupation as in school; his current residence as Bokchito, Oklahoma (Bryan County); and his nearest relative as his mother, Mamie Grisham Long.

The 1920 Federal Census for Bokchito, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows Edgar Long, a retail grocery clerk, age 20, born in Tennessee; living with his father, William R. Long, a retail grocery clerk, age 44, born in Tennessee; and his mother, Mamie Grisham Long, age 41, born in Tennessee. Also Living with them James Edgar's brother, Grisham Long, age 17, born in Tennessee. In addition, William's niece, Thelma L. Milton, age 9; and his nephew, Deward Milton, age 7; both born in Texas; were living with the family.

The 1930 Federal Census for Bokchito, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows Edgar Long, age 30, born in Tennessee; living with his father, William R. Long, a farmer, age 56, born in Tennessee; and his mother, Mamie Grisham Long, age 51, born in Tennessee. Living with them was William's nephew, Deward Milton, age 17; born in Texas.

The 1940 Federal Census for Bokchito, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows Edgar Long, a livestock trader, age 40, born in Tennessee; living with his father, William R. Long, age 66, born in Tennessee; and his mother, Mamie Grisham Long, age 61, born in Tennessee.

James Edgar died April 26, 1974 and was buried in the Highland Cemetery in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County) near his parents.
