Public health official. After serving in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army, Dr. Richard H. Baerg attended USC and graduated from the California College of Podiatric Medicine as Valedictorian in 1968. He completed his residency program at Highland-Alameda Hospital and was one of the "Highland Twelve" who changed the modern practice of podiatric medicine. He was named among the Outstanding Young Men in America in 1968 and appeared in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1982. At age 34 he was the Dean and Acting President of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine from 1971-1974, Academic Dean of the California College of Podiatric Medicine, 1974-1976, Director of the Southern California Podiatric Medical Center at L.A. County/USC Medical Center, 1976-1978, President of the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine, 1978-1979, and Director of Podiatry Service for the United States Department of Veteran's Affairs, Central Office, Washington, D.C., 1979-1986. He was Chief of Podiatry at Loma Linda V.A. Hospital from 1984-1989, and he enjoyed private practices in Beverly Hills, CA and Chapel Hill, NC. In 1989 he was appointed by Governor George Deukmejian to the Board of the California Department of Consumer Affairs where he served for several years. Throughout his career he acquired two masters degrees, three doctorate degrees, and authored over 30 medical journal articles, and several textbook chapters. His last article was published in 2006. He loved classical music, classic films, boiler makers, and The Three Stooges. He left behind a mother, two brothers, three children, five grandchildren, and many friends.
