Clarence Charles Barnett, LTC United States Army Retired, 93, died Friday, September 6, 2013 at Cottage in the Meadow in Yakima.

Clarence was born in Yakima, Washington, a son of Judge Dolph and Lillian (Russell) Barnett. He attended the Yakima Public Schools and graduated from the University of Washington where he was affiliated with Delta Chi Fraternity.

Barnett entered federal military service with the 161st Infantry Regiment, Washington National Guard, when it was mobilized into the active military of the United States on September 16, 1940. During World War II, he participated in the campaigns for New Guinea and the Philippines on the islands of Leyte and Luzon.

He returned home to Yakima in December 1945 after military service in Japan.

During the Korean War, he was recalled to active military service in January 1951. Assignments also included Germany, Thailand and Vietnam. He graduated from the United States Army Command and General Staff College and had assignments with the Army Arctic Test Board in Alaska; Headquarters, Sixth Army at the Presidio of San Francisco; and Headquarters, United States Army, Pacific at Fort Shafter, Hawaii. In 1962, Clarence was a Sixth Army observer for the firing of the Davy Crockett mortar nuclear weapon during Exercise Ivy Flats at the Nevada Test Site using troops in atomic battlefield conditions.

After military retirement, Barnett worked ten years as comptroller for a Savings and Loan Association in Yakima. He served 22 years on the Yakima City Council and was Mayor when Yakima celebrated its Centennial. He then worked part time for the Central Washington Home Builders Association until March 2010.

He served as Chairman of the Yakima District Board of Health and the Yakima Valley Conference of Governments. For several years, he represented the City of Yakima on the Yakima Air Terminal Board. He was a member of the Northwest Citizens Forum on Defense Waste and was a strong advocate for the expansion of the Army Yakima Training Center to meet modern maneuver training requirements.

Memberships during Barnett's life included: Englewood Christian Church; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 379; American Legion Post 36; Mount Adams Masonic Lodge 227; Scottish Rite Bodies of Free Masonry; Masada Shrine; Yakima Kiwanis; Yakima Valley Genealogical Society; Yakima Chamber of Commerce; Sons of the American Revolution; Knife and Ford Club and Community Concert Association.

Survivors include his loving wife, Lois Hawthorne Barnett of 70 years; daughter Joan Barnett of Yakima; daughter Patricia Heilbron and husband Richard of California; five grandchildren: Kathryn Whitfield and husband Matthew of North Carolina; Dolph Warburton and wife Stephanie of New York City; Albert Warburton and wife Elizabeth of Texas; Sarah Pipkin and husband, Donald of California; Richard Heilbron of California; two great-grandchildren Jacob and Allyson Whitfield. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents. His brother, 1st Lt. Dolph Barnett, Jr. was killed in action on Luzon, Philippine Islands in 1945 during World War II.

At Clarence's request there will be no public funeral services. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children c/o Keith & Keith Funeral Home, 902 W. Yakima Ave., Yakima, WA 98902.

Private family services and interment will be held at Terrace Heights Memorial Park.
