Mr. Harlan Jesse Bayer, 91, of Waynesboro, died Saturday, July 13, 2013 in the Chambersburg Hospital.

Born April 10, 1922 in Duffield, PA, he was the son of Daniel George Bayer and Rachel Elizabeth (Garber) Bayer.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Betty Lee (Grimm) Bayer; his son, Harlan Eugene Bayer of Waynesboro; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Daniel Bayer of Roanoke, VA and Kenneth Bayer of Wirtz, VA; four sisters, Nora Boone of Rocky Mount, VA, Frances King of Hagerstown, MD, Julia Hess of Waynesboro, and Esther Bayer of Waynesboro; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Gerald Wayne Bayer; his brothers, John Bayer, Samuel Bayer, Paul Bayer, and Joseph Bayer; and his sister, Elizabeth Bayer.

Prior to a four year enlistment in the United States Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946, he worked on the family dairy farm near Boonsboro, MD. He was employed by Fairchild Aircraft as a flight line crew chief until 1958, when he and his wife purchased the Waynesboro Paint and Glass Company. They subsequently moved the store from downtown Waynesboro to Wayne Heights in 1961, later selling the business in 1972. He was also a residential building contractor and land developer in Franklin County, PA and Washington County, MD.

Upon his retirement, he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for over 20 years, building houses in Franklin County, PA. He also volunteered with the Jimmy Carter Work Projects, both internationally and within the United States, traveling to South Africa, Hungary, Mexico, and the Philippines.

He was a member of the Old Order German Baptist Church, Antietam Congregation.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, July 17, 2013 in the Antietam Meeting House, Waynesboro, PA, with the home brethren officiating. Burial will be in the adjacent church cemetery.
