Rose Freeman Gillette was born of Jewish parentage. She married a Cherokee County farmer, Guy M. Gillette. Rose was a teacher in the public school system. Her husband, Guy Gillette, was a two term U.S. (D) Senator. Senator Gillette and U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. Will Rogers Jr., co-sponsored legislation that forced the Roosevelt Administration to eventually create the War Refugee Board in 1944. The Board, working with famous Holocaust Rescuers such as Raoul Wallenberg, saved an estimated 200,000 Jews from death at the hands of the Nazis.

The Gillette's had one adopted son.
