Philanthropist Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, KG. concerned himself with the reform of the lunacy laws, protection of colliery workers and chimney-sweeps, the reclamation of juvenile offenders, and better housing for the poor.

He became a Tory MP for Woodstock in 1826, and almost immediately became a leader of the movement for factory reform. He was chairman of the Ragged Schools Union and a supporter of Florence Nightingale.
