A dead body was found last Saturday about 3 miles above Franklin, Texas, about 300 yards from the road in a thicket of brush, which was accidentally discovered by a herder who was driving his cattle to water. He reported the act to the authorities at Franklin. The Justice of the Peace and several others hastened to the spot where they found the body of an American who had been seen the day previous by the telegraph reparer who informed them that he had passed the same man on the road several times; That he was well dressed; had a burro packed with mining tools and provisions. By the side of his body was found two coffee-pots, a doubled edge axe and a memorandum book with the name of John Collins, from Iowa, late from Leadville, Colorado. The unfortunate man was found laying on his face where he evidently lay down to sleep with the back of his head split, undoubtedly done with this axe. The body was taken to Franklin and buried on the following day. Col. Baylor with ten of his Rangers took the trail of the murderer and followed it up the road toward Mesilla where he was informed by parties who had seen the murdered man's outfit that they had seen the same burro and outfit in the possession of a Mexican who was going toward Mesilla. We have not been able to learn whether Col. Baylor was successful in his search or not. Had the Justice of the Peace of Franklin understood his business he would have telegraphed to Sheriff Cuniffe at once and possibly the red-handed murderer might have been caught.
