"Asbury Rites Held Today"

Isaac Asbury, 103, of Forest Grove died at Tuality Community hospital Monday following a brief illness.

Services were held today (Thursday) at the Glaske Chapel of Fuiten Friesen Mortuary in Beaverton.

The Rev. Dr. Lester Harnish, pastor of the White Temple Baptist church of Portland, officiated with Mrs. Gordon Asbury, soloist.

Concluding rites and interment were at the family plot at Riverview cemetery in Portland.

Mr. Asbury was born in Victory, Wis., on Oct. 25, 1862. At 14 years of age, he left home to earn his own living and at 19 he went to South Dakota where he taught school for several years. He lived in eastern Nebraska and South Dakota before moving to Portland in 1912. In 1918, he and his wife moved to a small farm on Canyon Road, near Beaverton, which was their home for 25 years. They later lived with the daughter in Portland.

Mr. Asbury was married to Annie Stevenson at Viroqua, Wis., on Jan. 1, 1884, and they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary before her death in 1950.

Mr. Asbury was active in civic affairs promoting church and school improvement wherever he lived. He was a member of the First Baptist (White Temple) church of Portland since 1918. he was active in the Masonic lodge having been a member since 1905, and also of the Royal Arch Masons.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Vera Cox of Portland; a son, Andy of Sheridan; a brother, Marion Asbury of Cottage Grove; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Article from the "Oregon Journal" newspaper, Portland, Oregon, October 29, 1962, pg. 9, col. 1:

"Isaac Abraham Asbury of Portland celebrated his 100th birthday Sunday and members of his family held a party to mark the event. Among celebrants was his 76-year-old son, of Sheridan, and a great, great grandchild, 15-month-old Cheryl Smith, who came to the party with her parents from Springfield. Spry and active, centenarian Asbury is an avid baseball fan, still bemoans the San Francisco Giants' loss in the World Series. The space race puzzles this man who said he 'never smoked, drank alcohol, or told lies' and recommends working outdoors to anyone aspiring to a ripe old age."
