Edward David Cornell
Edward was born on May 30, 1915 to William and Martha (Nagel) Cornell on the family farm near Gary, South Dakota where he was raised and attended the Troup Country School. Following his education, he helped on the family farm and worked several other jobs in the area. On September 30, 1940 Ed enlisted in the United States Army where he served in the 3rd Infantry Division during WWII. During his enlistment, he served in North Africa and Italy. On July 8, 1945 he was honorably discharged. Ed returned to the Gary, South Dakota area.
On May 3, 1948, he was united in marriage to Doris Hanson in Gary, South Dakota. Following their marriage, they lived and farmed near Gary. At the age of 62, Ed retired and began tearing down old buildings, which he continued to do for 20 years. Ed passed away surrounded by his family on December 9, 2003 at the age of 88 years, 6 months and 9 days.
He was a lifelong member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gary, South Dakota. Ed was also a lifetime member of the Peden-Cole American Legion Post #109 in Gary, South Dakota. Ed enjoyed many things which include: fishing, traveling, cross country skiing, horseshoes, cards, chess, reading, watching the Minnesota Twins and history. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Doris Cornell, Gary, SD; four daughters: Pamela Taylor, Durango, CO, Janet (Terry) Singsaas, Becker, MN., Jacalyn (Ron) Sillman, St. Clair, NM and Debra (Joe) Erickson, Sioux Falls, SD.; 11 grandchildren: Nicole, Stephanie, Jeffrey, Jason, Jesse, Joshua, Benjamin, Joseph, Toby, Cody and Megan; six great-grandchildren: Emily, Sydney, Jaymyson, Dominick, Parker and Caden; Three sisters Ruth Savage, Colorado, Edna Carson, Willernie, NM and Ester West, Canby, NM; one brother: Art (Ann) Cornell, Albert Lea, MN. and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Martha; four sisters, Rose Claeys, Ella Cornell, Lena Heaton and Mary Nygaard; and two brothers, Carl and Leonard Cornell.
