Leonard Adell McLeod
Birth: Feb. 8, 1906
Robeson County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Jan. 5, 1969
Los Angeles County
California, USA

Leonard Adell McLeod was known as Adell by his family. He was the 8th child of 11 children and the 4th son, of five. His mother passed away when Adell was three months old.

Traditionally, the McLeods were farmers. They lived on a 44-acre farm in Robeson County. They had relocated to Buie from Richmond County in 1902 - four years before Adell's birth.

Adell attended the nearby Philadelphus School, which was a nationally known boarding school that was also attended by local children. He and his younger half-brother, Archie Hilburn McLeod, (both pictured at right) were best friends and in the same class.

In 1926, Hilburn enlisted in the U.S. Army and Adell seems to have done likewise. The 1930 US Federal Census finds him as an enlisted man in the U.S. Army stationed at Ewa Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii Territory. He was a member of the 23rd Squadron at Luke Field.

By 1940, he was a tile maker living in San Antonio, Texas, and married to Virginia S. Perry (1911-1987). The census indicates they were living in her widowed mother's household since at least 1935. San Antonio is also home of Fort Sam Houston, a large army base. Most likely they met before Adell was discharged from the army.

Family lore states that Adell worked as an engineer with Boeing. When his employer transferred him out of Texas, his wife refused to move and they were divorced, circa 1941-1943. There were no children. By January 1944, his father's obituary states he was living in Deming, New Mexico.

On February 8, 1946, his 40th birthday, Adell married divorcee Hazel Marie Barbee of Los Angeles. They made their home in Bellflower, California. It was a lovely house with fruit trees in the backyard. Adell was stepfather to Hazel's son Gary De Lay. They had no children together.

Of the five McLeod brothers, Adell is the only one buried outside of North Carolina. The others are all buried at Philadelphus Presbytherian Church Cemetery in Philadelphus, Robeson County.
