Margaret Dean was my great grandmother. When I was brought home from the hospital they handed me to her and asked if I was hers from then on I was. My sister named her Grandma Great. I remember going into Grandma Great's bedroom (she lived with her only living daughter, Esther) and she would show us pretty bottles of creams and powder but the most interesting thing was the rattles from a rattlesnake that had bit her when she was a young girl. Her family lived on a farm outside of Maryville Missouri at Quitman; she was 5th of seven children in her family. The story was told of her great beauty and a young doctor in Maryville drove out to meet her. His brother came along for the long ride. Dr. Lewellyn Powell Dean and Dr. Charles G. Dean courted the two sisters, Margaret and Esther (Hess or Hester). Sisters married brothers. Both had daughters who died young and both had two daughters that lived to be as close as any sisters. Lela Pearl was the first child of Lewellyn and Maggie, she died in 1894 from meningitis while they were in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1908 Lewellyn Dean died from Typhoid fever after a trip to Mexico. At that time the family lived in Caddo County, Oklahoma. In the 1910 census Esther and Maggie had moved to Shawnee, Oklahoma. Maggie married Frank Alexander Barney sometime after that date but they were divorced after a short time. Margaret spent a few years in California taking care of her brother Fred's children. She returned to Oklahoma and lived the rest of her life with her daughter in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
