My uncle was born on August 4,1917,to the late Annie Mae Riggins Otting and Robert Jefferson Otting,Sr. He was fondly called "R.J." by many, but I called him "Uncle J". At a few months old,R.J. suffered a high fever and became crippled for the rest of his life. He could not talk or walk, but we all had means to communicate with him. He was very smart, dispite his disabilities. My grandmother took care of him until her stroke in 1980.
R.J. was also preceded in death by his brothers: Jack Edward in 1975,and Elbert in 1984. His other brother,John Willis died in 2006,and his infant twin brother,Roy D. Otting. His sisters include: the late Rosetta Otting Mathews who died in 2000, Annie L. Otting,June Otting, and Sadie Otting Ledbetter.
My uncle was loved by everyone who knew him. I have very special memories of R.J. With my cousin's help, R.J. loved to play "Old Maids" with me. In his younger years,he loved to play checkers with his brothers and sisters by using his big toe to move the checkers. R.J. loved getting out and going places. He dearly loved going to church and listening to sacred harp singing. They would leave the church doors open, and the car door open so he could listen to the service. We all miss him very much.
R.J. passed away on January 11,1992. Jennings Funeral Home, here in Rome,Georgia, was in charged of the funeral arrangements. His funeral was at Mount Olive Baptist Church, and was buried at East View Cemetery.
