Jack nm Mathews
Birth: Jan. 26, 1919
Death: May 12, 1988

My daddy was born in 1919 to William David and Della Hart Mathews. He was raised in Jackson County, Florida. His brothers were Addis and Eddie Mathews. His sisters were Codie Mathews Hartzog and Virgie Mathews Hartzog. He served in the army as a corporal and was stationed mainly in Colorado during World War II. He and my mother, Rosetta Otting, corresponded by letters for 3 years before they met in 1945. Later that year they married, and settled in Rome, Georgia. They tried for years and were not able to have any biological children. On October 17,1958, they adopted me, Kathy Diane. He fondly called me "Sam" until the day he passed away.
He was a coin collector, and an avid southern gospel and classic country music fan. Daddy really admired the talent of Randy Travis, who was just getting started in the business. Daddy loved to watch his comedies on television, and Bob Hope and Ray Stevens were his favorite comedians.
My daddy passed away from a blood clot that had traveled to his brain, following surgery to remove a ruptured colon. He would have really been proud of his 4 great-grandchildren, whom he didn't live to see. He is missed greatly by his family and his friends. He is fondly remembered for his clean-cut humor.
Funeral services for Jack Mathews will be at 3:30 p.m. today at Hollywood Baptist Church.
The Rev. David Harper and the Rev. Ralph Dingler will officiate. Interment will be at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Mathews, 69, of 112 Juniper Way S.E.,died Thursday evening at a Rome Hospital after a two weeks' illness.
Mr. Mathews moved to Rome in 1945. He was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church, where he served as an usher and was a member of the Brotherhood. He was a member of Oostanaula Lodge No.113 F&AM, the Low Twelve Club and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army. He was associated with Burlington Mills in the weave room for 25 years prior to his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, the former Rosetta Otting, to whom he was married on Aug. 16, 1945; Kathy Mathews Franklin, Rome; two sisters, Mrs. Codie Hartzog of Malone, FLA, and Mrs. Virgie Hartzog of Orlando, FLA; three grandchilden.
My thanks to Maureen for sponsoring this memorial. Many thanks for all the flowers put on here for my Daddy.
