Lou Ella graduated from the University of Mississippi at Oxford, where she was a member of the Delta Zeta and Chi Delta Phi Sororities. She was a teacher in Sardis, MS for a number of years before marrying Lee Byers in 1946. When she and Lee moved to Oxford in 1953, they opened "Byers Tax Service" where they did a good business until the late 1960's.

Lou was a doting daughter, wife, and mother. She was quite short and very bright. She was extremely proud of her husband Lee and her only child George, who was named after Lou's brother, George Garrett.
