Edmund Etherington.
Edmund Etherington, son of Richard and Elizabeth Thorne Etherington, was born in Galena township, Laporte county, Ind., Oct. 6, 1846, and died March 11, 1923, after an illness of four days. Death was caused by pneumonia, although he had been in poor health for about six years.
Mr. Etherington was one of a family of 10 children, all of whom are now deceased.
His boyhood was spent in Galena township, where he received a common school education. At the age of 18 he went to California, making the journey by stage. In 1866 he returned to Galena township and devoted himself to farming.
He was married March 22, 1867, to Mary Ellen Sperry, daughter of Aurea and Mary Sperry, who were early settlers of Galena township.
One son, Earl Richard Etherington, was born to this union.
In 1866 Mr. Etherington removed to the city of Laporte, where he conducted a coal and wood business for four years. Returning to his farm in 1890, he served as trustee of Galena township six years. He was one of the organizers of the Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Co. and served as president of the company several years. Early in life he united with the Christian church and was a republican in political allegiance.
After the death of his wife, which occurred July 11, 1914, he removed to Michigan City, where he lived until 1918. He was married to Mrs. Lily Maxwell Feb. 5, 1919, who, with the son, Earl Etherington, and two granddaughters survive him.
The funeral was held from his residence in Laporte Wednesday afternoon [14 Mar 1923] at 2:30 o'clock, with Rev. Long officiating. Interment took place in Pine Lake cemetery.

[Edmund Etherington also married the widower Emma Jane (Partridge) Hays in Berrien County, Mich., on 18 Aug 1917. She died of kidney failure on 28 Dec 1917.]
