Gene was born on May 12, 1920, in Hibbing to Frank and Mabel (Rouse) Monroe. He attended school in Hibbing and Chisholm – graduating from Chisholm High School in 1939. After two years at Hibbing Junior College, he served in the Air Force during World War II in Corsica and Italy. On April 17, 1943, Gene married his sweetheart, Violet May Johnson, in Duluth. To this union four children were born: Barbara, Robert, Susan and Donald.
Gene worked as a railroad engineer for Reserve Mining for 30 years, retiring in 1982. He was active in the Babbitt Baptist Church and Eastridge Community Church of Duluth. He is survived by his children, Barbara (Bud) Olberg of Hibbing, Robert (Susan) Monroe of North Branch, Minn., Susan (Earl) Fashbaugh of The Woodlands, Texas, and Donald (Barbara) Monroe of Hibbing; a sister-in-law, Gerrie Monroe of Sedona, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two nephews; and many cousins and friends.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Violet in 2005; his only brother, Frank Merrill Monroe; and nephew Larry Monroe.
Funeral: A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at 2 p.m. in the Anderson-Daniels Funeral Home Chapel in Hibbing.
Burial: A private spring inurnment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery.
