Maurice Irving Machell, son of Dr. Henry T. and Mrs. Machell, enlisted in the 19th Battalion in the autumn of 1914. In the spring of 1915 Machell was sent overseas, where he was appointed to the 3rd King's Shropshire Light Infantry. He served as a musketry instructor with the unit until being sent to France in
June 1916. Machell was assigned to the 5th Battalion of the Regiment. His death came in the attack on Delville Wood, where he led a party to eliminate
