Joseph enlisted in the Union Army on 20 August 1861 from Tonica, LaSalle County, Illinois in Co. I, 11th Regt. IL Infantry. He was wounded in the Battle of Ft. Donelson, TN. He was transferred to a hospital in Nashville, where he died from his wounds. Joseph was born Joseph Bacon, but like his brother Alonzo, he went by the surname of Black, which was the surname of their older half-siblings. Joseph was the son of Orin Bacon and Eliza Bell Wolfinger.
